This small coin was one of the first examples of "round" coins from the Zhou Dynasty.
It was also one of the first coins to have a square centre hole instead of a round one. The coin was cast in the ancient state of Yan during the period 300-220 BC. Chinese thought that Earth is square and the heaven or everything that surrounds Earth is circular, that shows the harmony of Qi circulation between them. Acupuncture reestablishes this lost harmony, treating patients who are between the Heaven and Earth, using Qi of both Heaven and Earth, as both the Heaven and the Earth are parts of patient's Qi.
Is the Earth really square? It is correct from Chinese point of view, not geometrically but energetically.

五行 Wu Hsing

Picture
Chinese medicine has the basic theory of 5 movements or Wu Sing, which may be explained in the following way. Here is a picture of the Five Movements, the theory of universal Qi movement and transformation systematized at 400 BC. Two horizontal lines on the top and the bottom are Heaven and Earth, so everything between them is Qi, which transforms according to 5 movements. You will ask me where I take five movements if the cross which describes these movements contains only 4 lines?
It is true. But how Chinese saw 5 movements? Let’s imagine that each line is a season of the year. So according to Classical Chinese medicine and Acupuncture Qi starts it’s movement on one of these lines and stays on this season, say spring, around 75 days, to be transmitted to another line or season Qi passes the cross where it stays around 15 days and follows to another line. It stays in following line, say summer, for next 75 days and follows to another line through the cross in the middle where it stays again for 15 days and so on. Totally Qi passes 4 seasons of 75 days and 4 times of enter seasonal period of 15 days. Totally 360 days of the year. Each of these lines belongs to the Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and entre season to Long Summer and each of the different Qis have the name of different energies or Wood木, Fire火, Metal金, Water水 and Earth土.

5 movements and 6 energies

So Earth is affected by 4 Qis (4 sides of rectangle)and 5th Qi is the Qi of Earth.
As you can notice sign of Five on this coin the same as we were talking before in five movements.
So the five movements and six energies or Qis is a one of doctrines of Classical Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. It explains that Six energies or Qis of the Heaven combine with Five movements of the Earth producing different climatic changes and energetic changes affecting everybody between Heaven and Earth including all people.
These changes occur in small and large cycles of 60 days to 60 years and are known as Stems and Branches.

Heaven and Earth interaction

Picture
Following pictures explains that square Earth in the middle (not geometrically as we noticed before) influences to the space were people leave with it’s red Qi and Heaven surrounding the Earth influences same space with it’s dark Qi (fig.left bottom) , producing coin-like image(fig.left). So when human body fails to react and adapts to these climatic or energetic changes these energies or Qis to work in a different regime or timing of someone's regular body regime, producing a disease or entering in resonance, inducing itself into destruction (fig. bottom centre) . They do not work in unison anymore as a beautiful music peace played by two musicians in different rhythms,  so together they produce horrible noise instead of music. In this case we say that patient become susceptible to the influence of pathological Qis or energies, but now we understand that they are just imbalanced. We say that patient becomes sick instead of realizing that he/she is unbalanced. To treat any condition we need to return the patient to be in balance with the external energies, so he/she can live peacefully without any disease and in the harmony with surrounding space. We apply acupuncture for this purpose, using a needle or a conductor, which connects the patient with the surrounding Qi. Returning him/her back into unison with space or as we say with Nature (fig. bottom right). Thousands of years ago people could return themselves to this original healthy condition without help of any medicine or acupuncture. There are evidences that some people still can do it today. But today most of us live in a different world, affected by stress and excesses, so we need more sophisticated tools to help us. One of these tools is acupuncture.

Square earth and round heaven is a quite universal explanation used by Chinese ansestors to explain their life. Humans themselves have similar organization from the point of view of classical Chinese medicine and acupuncture. Each human or animal organism has it's Qi as we mentioned earlier. This Qi is consists from Square or internal, pure Qi and external, circular, surrounding or protective Wei Qi. Pure Qi circulates through meridians between internal organs and resides inside of said organs. Protective Qi circulates around surface of our body protecting it from external invasion. This Qi was produced through separation of clear and turbid substances during digestion and moved away through meridians to the surface. It can penetrate back to meridians to intercommunicate with internal pure Qi, but it can't penetrate inside the organs were pure Qi resides. Same way pure Qi can't circulate around surface of our body as protective Wei Qi does but it can intercommunicate with Wei Qi circulating in meridians where protective Qi passes. So we have similar system of intercommunication of internal square Earth and surrounding circular Heaven at level of human body.
This interpretation of natural processes is an earliest practical explanation of contemporary second law of thermodynamics which states that if some system has disorder or entropy and need to restore order, it takes energy from another connected system, restoring order in itself and increasing disorder in said connected system.
We are born with relative order, that we name health, but with lapse of years we lose some energy or Qi, producing some disorder which is interpreted as disease. Medicine claims to be able to restore original order, curing the disease. If we take pill or some medication it eventually restores order in affected system but produces disorder in surrounded system or any other connected system. Here is a reason why all medications have adverse effect. It can't be different from the point of view of modern thermodynamics neither from the point of view of classical Chinese science, medicine or acupuncture.
Huang Di, Yellow Emperor, in his medical book Ling Shu, first chapter about 9 needles, requires use of acupuncture as medications poison his people, that shows his knowledge about adverse effect of second law of thermodynamics regarding pharmacopeia.
Acupuncture from the other side connects affected disordered system of sick patient directly with Qi of Heaven and Earth. Of course it produces some disorder in external system for sake of restoring order inside of small system of patient, but this disorder is so microscopic that can't be seriously measured.
So what patient may expect after acupuncture treatment?
Acupuncturist needs study patient’s pulse first of all to find which of 5 movements are affected that produces incorrect Qi flow through meridians and misbalance. After that practitioner will restore affected meridians, normalise their connection using simple conductor as fine sterile disposable needle.
Acupuncture doesn't use any medication as it was said earlier, so its effect depends on reaction of immune system of patient on the first place. As the example we can compare it to the wound. Microorganisms from the wound penetrates to the blood stream, where these microorganisms will be recognized, represented to specific immune cells, immune defence will be developed and finally will eliminate all said microorganisms in few weeks without any noticeable subjective reaction of patient. From the other side immune system may produce reaction with acute inflammation, redness, swollenness, pus production straight on the affected area with short development and soon cure.
Similar effect may be noticed as reaction to acupuncture treatment. Patient may feel even worse straight after the acupuncture procedure, which is known as sickness of acupuncture in some languages or reaction to acupuncture or even allergy to the needle.
This reaction is a reason of depletion of patient's Qi for long period of time. To explain it we need to agree that larger volume of the physical body may contain more energy or Qi. We know it from the example of battery, bigger battery, more powerful it is. From the other side greater volume produces faster increase of entropy or disorder once energy or Qi is decreasing. So living organisms has developed defensive reaction to decrease of energy or Qi for long time: they decrease their volumes. Tissues start to decrease space between cells and decrease volume of cells and their quantity producing hardening of tissues or sclerosis due to alteration or aging. It is a normal defence of the organism to the decrease of energy.
When after acupuncture treatment energy increases, it needs to increase volume too, but it doesn't happen immediately. Cells or tissues become overcharged, Qi circulates through hard tissues, vessels or meridians overflowing them, leaving meridians and stopping in surrounding tissue. Same effect happens after an injury when disorientated Qi leave meridian and stops in surrounding areas producing pain. Treating Qi disorientation after an injury acupuncturist instantly stops pain. Most of  depleted patients after first treatment of acupuncture may notice increase of pain, complaining feeling beaten until their Qi obtain correct orientation and its flow normalized. This effect usually is noticeable only after first treatment and doesn't disturb patients with following consecutive treatments. Acupuncturists can decrease this effect providing patient with proper general treatment together with symptomatic. Practitioner may just by checking the pulse come to conclusion which system is depleted mostly and needs urgent attention. About pulse diagnostic please read page    about preventive acupuncture.
I hope you enjoyed the short story of the round Chinese coin with a square hole in the middle.
